Die Aufgabe des Elektronikers für Automatisierungstechnik besteht darin, einen gewünschten Prozessablauf zu analysieren und eine Anlage, entsprechend dieser Anforderung und gültiger Normen, aufzubauen. Er wählt Bauteile und elektronische Komponenten selbstständig aus, zeichnet Stromlaufpläne und programmiert mit Hilfe einer Steuerung seine Anlage. Im Anschluss werden diese in Betrieb genommen und Instand gehalten.
